Wisdom Of Humility

Image
While concluding one of the brainstorming session with my manager in the States, where we were discussing the calculation for a performance metric, I asked - "What according to you lies at the heart of leadership?" Since this man is an exceptionally amazing leader and a fantastic human, I couldn't prevent myself from asking this question. And I was ready to gather all the wisdom around various kinds of leadership, and go over the famous 'not one value fits everywhere' track, etc. "Humility" , he said with a smile. While that is essential, I was definitely not expecting such a crisp response. He stated that the most vital yet underrated ingredient in our respective definitions of leadership is being humble. And the next 20 minutes I spent understanding his style of leading. What do you think is the most striking quality of that one person in your circle you find the most inspiring? While the answers can be subjective, I am sure at the base of those qualit...

YOU: Start Where You Are, Do What You Can

Few years back while I was walking up to the Sherabling Monastry (in pic below) in Bir – Billing  along with my sister, I casually told her that I wish to write. “A book, you mean?”, she asked. “I am not sure, and I don’t even have anything chalked out.” With this absolute vague notion, I anxiously uttered – “even if I write, who would it be for?” “FOR YOU. Isn’t that a reason good enough for you to at least get started.”, she said in a voice brimming with compassion. It is funny how someone makes you aware of things that you know already but are hesitant to bring into practice or even consider. It has certainly been done earlier, but it hasn't been done by you. – Liz Gilbert (Big Magic) Our work is like a love letter to people out there in the world. With our work we can either create new dimensions, for ourselves and people around us, OR we can facilitate a wider understanding of something that exists already. We may not even know what element of our work can not only make a...

Say it Often: I Don't Know

'I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing and that is that I know nothing’ – Plato. The first thing that comes out of our mouth when we are put across anything unexpected is – ‘I don’t know’. I recently found that it is one of the most liberating yet limiting phrases in the history of the mankind. The reason why I say 'liberating' is because – it lets you be open and evolve in terms of your thought process and ‘limiting’ because we as humans feel defeated when we have to state ‘I don’t know’ as an answer. In the past there were innumerable situations where I was taken aback because of the fear of being unaware about a certain subject. I was of the kind who would avoid a conversation only to conceal my fear of not knowing all. I always thought that not knowing about something is a sign of incompetence. However, very soon I realized that I would remain stuck in a rabbit hole if I continued to ignore the opportunities, that could turn out to be life’s greatest lessons. ...

Dare To Share

Have we ever tried to take a pause and think – ‘why have we been blessed with this beautiful gift called Life '? ‘What are we doing with it?’ ‘Is the life that we are leading of any use to others?’ It took me a while to realize that nothing in this world would mean anything if we do not have a life of use to others. The essence of happiness lies in sharing. And by sharing, I am not referring to sharing of material possessions, but something that could never be returned. A ‘smile’ that could make someone’s day; a patient ‘ear’, that makes one feel valued; warmth of a ‘hug’, that does nothing but heals. We often underestimate the power of a soothing touch, a true compliment, responding to a message, a compassionate smile, gratitude and other deeds that makes one feel ‘acknowledged’ and ‘appreciated’. In the heat of the moment it is easy to fight fire to fire. However, it takes courage to look beyond the differences and share a kind word. Be that of time, words, vibe, and knowledge – ...
