YOU: Start Where You Are, Do What You Can

Few years back while I was walking up to the Sherabling Monastry (in pic below) in Bir – Billing along with my sister, I casually told her that I wish to write.

“A book, you mean?”, she asked.

“I am not sure, and I don’t even have anything chalked out.” With this absolute vague notion, I anxiously uttered – “even if I write, who would it be for?”

“FOR YOU. Isn’t that a reason good enough for you to at least get started.”, she said in a voice brimming with compassion. It is funny how someone makes you aware of things that you know already but are hesitant to bring into practice or even consider.

It has certainly been done earlier, but it hasn't been done by you. – Liz Gilbert (Big Magic)

Our work is like a love letter to people out there in the world. With our work we can either create new dimensions, for ourselves and people around us, OR we can facilitate a wider understanding of something that exists already.

We may not even know what element of our work can not only make a difference but also be a pioneer for something we have never even imagined.

When we can find the courage to get started, we also provide ourselves something to work upon and improve at every day. We can always edit a bad page, but a blank page leaves absolutely no scope for improvement.

It is funny how social media has made us believe that the measure of our worthiness lies with all things external – views, likes, shares, comments, conversions, etc. However, what we tend to forget is – this is our journey and the better we get, the better we GET.

The secret ingredient to growth lies in doing things we think we are a little not ready for. When we push ourselves through the moments of doubt, it is only then that we experience a breakthrough. And most of the time that breakthrough is as simple and as subtle as getting started.

It all starts from YOU, because it is all about YOU, always has been. Here’s why -

  1. Once YOU make a choice to get started, you gently start to silence that voice within that has held you back.
  2. YOU learn to organize your thoughts and string them to facilitate effective story telling. This is one of the vital skills and can be used in other areas of your life as well.
  3. Irrespective of what you do, YOU learn to differentiate between validation and feedback. Feedback is necessary for us to grow and should be taken in a positive stride. Validation on the other hand was never required.
  4. YOU may not be able to generate a good audience/readership/conversion, but you will open your self to new learning opportunities.
  5. YOU learn to engage with the resources that can help you strengthen your knowledge.
  6. YOUr story of progress can be a guiding light for people out there. Hence, it’s a win – win.
